Over the past few years, one of our senior project managers, M. Mark Malekshahi, PE, has been an instructor/guest lecturer for Rice University School of Architecture’s Totalization design studio.  The graduate course offers a unique opportunity for architecture students to encourage collaborative and holistic, interdisciplinary approaches to complicated building design challenges.  The program for this year included a behind-the-scenes tour of the infrastructure components, including the geothermal systems, of the St. Patrick’s Cathedral restoration – one of Zubatkin’s project.  The studio’s work is also culminated in the publication of a book that includes several contributions from Mark.

Creating opportunities for professional development and technical skills training is an important part of our culture at Zubatkin.  This week, our team did a site walk through of the Spence Athletic and Ecology Center, where we are managing the construction of a new, out of the ground building on the Upper East Side.  This unique project features a regulation-size gymnasium, squash courts, student center, a multipurpose room for performing arts, an ecology center with a teaching lab and kitchen, and a greenhouse and outdoor space.

We’re proud to share that the Westport Weston Family YMCA held a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month to mark the start of construction for its next phase.  The work includes a 22,500 sf building addition for gymnastics and fitness and enhancements at Camp Mahackeno.  Zubatkin has been working with the Westport Weston Family YMCA since 2012.  Congratulations to the project team on this milestone!

We’re pleased to share that our recently completed Madison Square Boys & Girls Club project is going to be featured as part of the AIA’s Archtober programming!  Join the design team of Rogers & Partners on Friday, October 18^th for a tour of the new Pinkerton Clubhouse in Upper Harlem.  More information, including registration details, is included on the Archtober website.

CREW New York will be hosting a series of sessions, including one at Zubatkin’s offices, to share the opportunities associated with CREWNY membership. These will be smaller, more intimate gatherings to allow prospective members more opportunity for conversation and questions. Information sessions are open to all employed in commercial real estate interested in learning more about CREWNY.

For the fourth consecutive year, Zubatkin employees participated in Project First Day, a charitable initiative that connects low-income children with school supplies and other materials for the classroom. As a company, we are very proud to share that we prepared backpacks for 28 New York City children this year. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this success!

Zubatkin assisted in the coordination for artist Domingo Zapata to install and finalize his work of art upon 30,000 square feet of vinyl signage affixed to NYC’s iconic One Times Square building. Upon completion, this masterpiece will become the city’s largest mural.

The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) celebrates design excellence in architecture and design through the annual National Design Awards Program, attracting entries from across the country from individuals, firms, and students of architecture and allied disciplines. This week, our very own Suzanne Musho, Vice President at Zubatkin, will review awards submissions as part of the jury, which includes Carol Ross Barney of Ross Barney Architects, Yolande Daniels of studioSUMO, Brian Lee of SOM, and Juan Moreno of JGMA.  The awards program is chaired by Dennis Dong of CH&D, and the jury is co-moderated by David Stofcik of Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Geiger of MG2 Architecture.  More information on the awards program can be found on the SARA website.  The winners will be announced at the National Conference in Chicago this Fall.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Mahan Khajenoori to Senior Project Manager. Mahan is being recognized for the technical expertise she brings to her work and for her dedication in exceeding the expectations of our clients on a daily basis.  We applaud her efforts and are proud to acknowledge her contributions to Zubatkin.

We’re excited to share that Belvedere Castle reopened to the public at the end of June!  Designed by notable architects Olmsted and Vaux in 1858, the building underwent a comprehensive interior and exterior restoration led by the Central Park Conservancy to preserve this important New York City landmark for future generations.  The project also includes a new geothermal system, reflective of the Conservancy’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Zubatkin served as the owner’s representative, advising the Conservancy on contractor selection and negotiation and providing support through construction. On Thursday, the Zubatkin team was thrilled to participate in the ribbon cutting event for Madison Square Boys & Girls Club’s new Pinkerton Clubhouse.  The building will house a diverse set of social and educational programming for the North Central Harlem community and also serves as the new administrative hub and headquarters for the organization. We’re looking forward to seeing this important project in full use this Summer!
