9/11 Memorial & Museum

In every sense, Zubatkin was a partner in the creation of this Museum. We came to rely on their deep familiarity with the technical aspects of the project and oversight to the detailed budget. Whether managing schedules and financials, reviewing and processing change orders, or analyzing design recommendations to identify the best materials, they consistently advocated for and defended our interests, moving the project forward and helping us to deliver it on time and on budget.

Alice Greenwald
9/11 Memorial & Museum President & CEO

Situated within the archaeological site of the original World Trade Center towers, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum documents and presents the story of loss and recovery of September 11, 2001 and the 1993 bombing through a series of interactive multimedia displays, archives, narratives and collection of monumental and authentic artifacts.

Delivered as a public-private partnership, this museum is comprised of a significant exhibit program that displays over 1,000 artifacts. The project also features a theater, media and interactive components, and reflective space for victims’ families. The memorial exhibition is located in the footprint of the South Tower and commemorates the victims of the attacks. The historical exhibition is in the footprint of the North Tower that examines the day of the attacks, what preceded them and how the events of 9/11 continue to shape the world. The remaining artifacts, such as the Last Column and Survivor’s Stairs, are displayed in the interstitial spaces.

Role + Responsibilities

Zubatkin was deeply honored to have been selected to play a role in the development of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The Zubatkin team managed the exhibit development and installation, including the design completion, media production, media integration, graphics development, exhibit installation and commissioning. Working closely with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the exhibit design and construction teams, our team also assisted in coordinating the exhibit work with the base building infrastructure and provided the financial controls, administration and reporting. The firm’s In-House Technical Group was instrumental in reviewing drawings and managing project risks.

The Museum opened to great public acclaim and has received 2.7 million visitors in its first year of operations.
